Expert: Cicadas should be no worry for gardeners

If you happen to be one of the people inundated with cicadas, you might be concerned about your trees. Todd Sherbondy, a sales arborist for The Davey Tree Expert Company, says you shouldn’t worry.
The 17-year cicadas known as Brood VIII emerged in late spring and are still filling the air with their loud songs.
“Typically we see a lot of cicadas in heavily wooded areas, lots of aesthetic damage on the ends of branches,” he says. “Most trees will recover without much of a problem.”
The females will use their ovipositor to lay eggs toward the end of branches, and that’s what scares homeowners.
“There’s not much you can do,” he adds. “They will be gone pretty directly.”
Mark your calendars for 2036, though, because that’s when this brood of cicadas will be back again.
