Doug Oster

I was only six or seven hanging upside down in my grandmother’s maple tree. I watched as she was watering her treasured tomato plants, it’s my first memory of gardening.I convinced my mother to help me put in a vegetable garden the next summer and the rest is history.

Over the years my garden obsessions have evolved just as I have. Over the years though, the therapeutic feeling of sitting in the garden at the end of the day still fills me with joy.

My garden is organic – nature has created a great balance of good bugs eating the bad bugs. The so called “Green Thumb” comes from the addition of compost when planting just about anything. Compost gives seeds and plants everything they need. When they have that, they’ll thrive.

My garden provides something in every season, whether it’s a few kale leaves in December, beautiful exfoliating bark of shrubs in February or bushels of ripe tomatoes in August. My kids grew up in the garden and although they are now grown and on their own, they always return asking to spend time out there and enjoy a fresh meal grown by their dad.

The garden is our gathering place and there’s no other place I’d like to spend time. The best part about it though, is sharing what happens in the garden with you.
