Free ‘Bonfire’ begonia plants and container gardening class with Doug Sunday

I’ll be giving away ‘Bonfire’ begonia plants in four inch pots this Sunday June 3, 1 p.m. at Bedner’s Farm and Greenhouse in McDonald. I’ll also be giving a free container gardening demonstration.

‘Bonfire’ begonias bloom like crazy and don’t need much from the gardener. The tuber can be saved over the winter and replanted the next season. These plants started from four inch pots and got this big in less than a month. Photo by Doug Oster

I’ve worked a few years to make this happen as I love ‘Bonfire.’ It’s has beautiful orange tubular flowers and a weeping habit that makes it perfect for containers, hanging baskets and growing on pedestals. I want you to be able to enjoy this plant, just like I have. It’s easy to grow, not fussy at all and the tuber can actually be saved at the end of the season.

I befriended plant breeder extraordinaire Anthony Tesselaar when he visited Pittsburgh a few years ago. I was telling him how much I loved ‘Bonfire’ and he stopped me short, saying he had introduced it to the market. Since then I’ve been on a mission to get the plant into more gardeners hands.

Last season, I told Russ Bedner of my dream and when I visited the greenhouse earlier this year his father Bob surprised me, showing me a table filled with the plants.

I can’t wait to give you one. You’re also welcome to buy a couple after receiving the free gift.

Bedner’s Farm and Greenhouse is located at 315 Coleman Rd. in McDonald, Pa.  Call 724-926-2541 for more information.
