Tomato problem

One of my tomato plants, located in the middle of my tomatoes, wilted severely over about 2 days. I pulled it out and found the lower part of the stem very dried with these black “beans” inside. I don’t think they are insects. What is this, what can I do and will it spread? Thanks very much!
