Every season brings with it challenges and fantastic surprises too. It’s fun to experiment with new things and when I saw ‘Green Tiger’ tomato at Plant-It Earth Greenhouse near Blairsville, I had to give it a try. There’s something thrilling about growing a “weird” new variety. You just never know if they will be a one season wonder or a long lasting, must have type to plant every season.
Tomatoes that are ripe when green have a little different flavor than their bright red cousins, but every variety, regardless of color, have a slightly different texture and taste.
The plant is prolific, filled with two inch elongated cherry tomatoes that come to a point.
They are striped in green, yellow and there’s a slight tinge of red in some of the fruit. The change from bright green to a more yellowish indicates they are ready to harvest.
The true test was when I left a few in the kitchen on a cutting board and when I looked again they were gone. My wife remarked “what were those green tomatoes, I love them.”
Looks like I’ve got another variety to plant every spring.
