Snowdrops are miraculous little signs of spring

It’s always a mystery when snowdrops will bloom. I’ve seen them flower in my garden as early as January 15th and as late as mid-March.

One thing for sure, they are a welcome surprise seeing them emerge in February.
It’s one reason planting the little bulbs in the fall is so important; once something blooms, there’s no turning back. The garden season has begun.

Snowdrops are tiny, the flowers are only about a 1/4 of an inch across. They are the star of the winter garden though.

Snowdrops are indestructible, even in bloom, as the flowers will sit in suspended animation until milder temperatures return.
There will be plenty of cold and snow, but snowdrops alert gardeners that spring is within reach. In about a month, cool weather seeds like peas will be in the ground as beautiful crocus flowers dot the landscape.
I can’t wait.
