My favorite weed

For the most part weeds are the bane of a gardeners existence, but it’s often said a weed is just an unloved flower.

The common dayflower is a beautiful weed. But is it really a weed? You decide.

I used spend a lot of time pulling everything I thought was a weed until I realized the beauty of some of their flowers. That’s when I realized a weed is only in our mind. If a plant grows wild and it’s a problem, it’s removed. But there are a bunch of varieties I let go to flower.

My favorite is common dayflower with it’s sky blue flowers and yellow anthers. Most gardeners try hard to include blue in the garden, this is an easy way to enjoy the color.

Jewelweed is a wild impatiens often refereed to as water weed. I pull a lot of it, but always leave a few around as it’s a great pollinator plant and the bright yellow flower is beautiful.

Every plant has a purpose, so think about what it can do to help or hinder your garden.

Take a look around the landsacpe and by slightly changing the way you think of what’s growing there, you might find solice in keeping a few weeds around if they please you.
