I finally got out in the garden after spending my days at the Home and Garden Show. It was so wonderful to be greeted by the hellebores in bloom.
There’s two basic types. The Lenten Rose (Helleborus orientalis), which blooms now and the Winter Rose (Helleborus niger), that blooms in November.
They are indestructible perennial beauties, deer resistant and have year round evergreen foliage.
Breeders have done wonders with the flowers, they come in many colors and shapes. Check out what Barry Glick of Sunshine Farms has done with them.
You can find them at any good garden center or nursery this time of the year.
One little trick I like to do with the flowers since they look downward is to float them in water. Whether it’s a birdbath, fountain or just a dish filled with water, it’s a great way to display the blooms.
It’s wonderful to have these fabulous flowers to enjoy so early in the season. I couldn’t imagine gardening without them.
