Gardening events: Hosta show, create a garden journal, pollinators & a statewide contest

The Daffodil & Hosta Society of Western Pennsylvania is hosting its annual hosta show where enthusiasts from all over can show off their best hostas.

The juried show features judges accredited by the American Hosta Society. Entries are accepted from 5 to 8 p.m. June 1 and 8 to 10 a.m. June 2. The exhibit will be open to the public after the judges award prizes.

Hostas will also be sold, starting at 10 a.m.

The free show is set for 1 to 4 p.m. June 2 at Soergel Orchards Farm Market, 2573 Brandt School Road, Wexford, PA 15090. Details: Jim Kalka, 724-933-3382.

Creating a garden journal

The Penn State Extension’s Master Gardener gardening partners program is offering a workship on “Creating A Garden Journal With Quality Photographs.”

The program will teach you how to create a garden journal and take quality photographs of your garden.

The free event is scheduled for 2 p.m. May 19 at the Premier Washington Health Center, 36 Old Hickory Ridge Road, Washington PA 15301. Details: 724-228-6881.

Pollinator presentation

Master gardener Allison Yeckel will be talking about how to attract pollinators to your garden. Yeckel will discuss different plants that attract pollinators and how to grow them in your garden.

The talk is set for 6:30 p.m. May 19 at Independence Township Community Center, 11 School St. Avella, PA 15312.

Gardening & Greening Contest

The Pennsylvania Horticulture Society’s Gardening & Greening Contest is now open for submissions, with nine categories.

The contest is open to residents of Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware and invites backyard gardeners, community gardeners and anybody who is passionate about greening public spaces to enter.

The categories include: Children’s Garden, Combination Garden, Container Garden, Flower Garden, Specialty Garden, Garden Block, Public Space (Plantings or Parks), Urban Farm and Vegetable Garden.
