In honor of National Book Lovers Day, we asked our gardening editor Doug Oster to come up with a list of his favorite books.

Naturally, he comes back with this:

“Grow Organic” by Doug Oster

“Tomatoes Garlic Basil” by Doug Oster

“A Gardener’s Journal” by Doug Oster

“A Gardener’s Notebook” by Doug Oster

“Steel City Garden” by Doug Oster

In all seriousness, Doug then came back with four books that have inspired him:

“The Art of Gardening: Design Inspiration and Innovative Planting Techniques from Chanticleer” by The Chanticleer Gardeners and R. William Thomas, with photographs by Rob Cardillo

I was judging the American Horticultural Society’s annual book competition when this came across my desk. I was blown away by all the gardening information, and the photography is incredible. I’ve had hundreds of garden books sent to me, but this one is part of my permanent collection.

“Backyard Foraging” by Ellen Zachos

This book contains fascinating tips on finding and eating plants that grow wild all over. Zachos is fun to read, and the photos are wonderful too.

“The Year Round Vegetable Gardener” by Niki Jabbour
This is the definitive book about growing vegetables off season. I’ve used many of the techniques in here to extend my own season, and the author taught me how harvest for 365 days a year.

“All New Square Foot Gardening II: The Revolutionary Way to Grow More in Less Space Paperback” by Mel Bartholomew

The first edition of this title is said to be the best-selling garden book of all time. Bartholomew reinterpreted his classic in the second edition. Don’t have four acres for a garden? No worries … just create a square foot garden.
